Now, cosplay will always be a hobby for me but one time it helped start my career and it admittedly remains a good way to network with the companies you admire. So for my Throwback Thursday I relay the story of my my Azula which I cosplayed at AnimeNEXT in 2006.

The introduction of Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee was just a couple weeks ago and my friends Morgan (Ty Lee) and Nicole (Mai)and I decided to do those new characters at AnimeNEXT. We were approached by someone who ended up being an editor on Nickelodeon Magazine who contacted us afterwards to interview us on the costumes and such and we were published in the upcoming issue.

Later that year, I had just started my junior year at college in graphic design and I actually contacted him again and asked if there were any internships at Nick Mag. He mentioned there was and forward me to his boss and we set up an interview and I got an internship the following summer and it was the best.

They had the orange couch of my childhood just in the lobby and I would just sit on it quietly because holy shit the orange couch. I got to layout, design type treatments, and I played a large part in the Avatar-special issue right before Season 3 where I reached out to cosplayers and artists for fan works, sent around things I thought funny (some which made it up to Bryan and Mike). Even at the conclusion of my internship, I did some paid freelance work for them for a time up until they had to fold.

It was a fantastic time and I’m lucky to have gotten the internship, I’m sure it made my resume look fantastic and now I enjoy a good career and some consistent clients for my freelance.

So I guess moral of the story is be as creative as you can and show it! You never know who your creativity will be seen by :)

(and then I cosplayed Amon years later and got reblogged by Bryan and Mike haha)

Things I learned to do while sewing Corvo

1. Make bias tape
2. Poly-satin is a fuckhole
3. Properly sew on bias tape
4. Sew proper belt loops
5. Hand-sew buttonholes
6. Press french seams for instant win
7. Mitered corners for bias tape
8. Iron every fucking thing ftw

Conclusion: Holy shit I am a terrible seamstress.
Theory: I don’t sew like shit when I have more time to work on things.
