Now, cosplay will always be a hobby for me but one time it helped start my career and it admittedly remains a good way to network with the companies you admire. So for my Throwback Thursday I relay the story of my my Azula which I cosplayed at AnimeNEXT in 2006.
The introduction of Azula, Mai, and Ty Lee was just a couple weeks ago and my friends Morgan (Ty Lee) and Nicole (Mai)and I decided to do those new characters at AnimeNEXT. We were approached by someone who ended up being an editor on Nickelodeon Magazine who contacted us afterwards to interview us on the costumes and such and we were published in the upcoming issue.
Later that year, I had just started my junior year at college in graphic design and I actually contacted him again and asked if there were any internships at Nick Mag. He mentioned there was and forward me to his boss and we set up an interview and I got an internship the following summer and it was the best.
They had the orange couch of my childhood just in the lobby and I would just sit on it quietly because holy shit the orange couch. I got to layout, design type treatments, and I played a large part in the Avatar-special issue right before Season 3 where I reached out to cosplayers and artists for fan works, sent around things I thought funny (some which made it up to Bryan and Mike). Even at the conclusion of my internship, I did some paid freelance work for them for a time up until they had to fold.
It was a fantastic time and I’m lucky to have gotten the internship, I’m sure it made my resume look fantastic and now I enjoy a good career and some consistent clients for my freelance.
So I guess moral of the story is be as creative as you can and show it! You never know who your creativity will be seen by :)
(and then I cosplayed Amon years later and got reblogged by Bryan and Mike haha)
Just shipped off my nurse costume so retirement photo set! This was the first girl costume I got to wear after I had lost 40 lbs on Weight Watchers about 3 years ago, Carly sure knows how to accentuate dem hips <3. She’s been my go-to person for girl costumes since.

My talented photographer friend Nicole pointed out these pictures I haven’t seen of my Oktavia courtesy of Adam! These were taken at Katsucon of last year, I’m probably gonna wear it one more time before I commit it to the for sale retired pile.

Also, I pretty much talked with every Dishonored cosplayer at PAX East, you guys are fucking AWESOME.
More photos to come!
Wanted to share an old costume from one of my favorite games, unfortunately I had to sell it because I had lost 40 lbs and it was too big for me. But memories! Probably one of the most labor intensive costumes, so much hand-sewing and hand-painting!
Still can’t make pants/shorts though oops.
I AM SO SICK OF SEWING OTL vest still needs to be fitted better and needs to be ironed don’t judge plz
1. Make bias tape
2. Poly-satin is a fuckhole
3. Properly sew on bias tape
4. Sew proper belt loops
5. Hand-sew buttonholes
6. Press french seams for instant win
7. Mitered corners for bias tape
8. Iron every fucking thing ftw
Conclusion: Holy shit I am a terrible seamstress.
Theory: I don’t sew like shit when I have more time to work on things.
Pretty sure I curse more while sewing than when I’m playing video games and while driving (in NJ) combined.
